Location:Situated in the Black Sea in the eastern Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria was founded in 681.
History: Monarchy was abolished and a people's republic was proclaimed in 1946. The country's first free election after four decades of communist rule was held in 1990, and an 11-member Corporate Presidency was elected to power. In October 1991, a non-communist government was elected. In April 1997, Bulgaria reformist Union of Democratic Forces scored a resounding victory in parliamentary elections. The country becomes a member of NATO in 2003.
