How To Reach Nalknad Palace ? :- By road: From Virajpet, head towards south-east on Virajpet – Madikeri road. Take a left deviation from Kathanoor jn. On Virajpet- Talacauvery road(SH-90.) Go for about 11kms till you reach the Cheyyandane jn. Continue on Virajpet – Talakaveri road. After 8km is Kalikambara jn. Turn left from there. It is just 3kms to Nalknad Palace. One can reach here from Madikeri via Napoklu in Kakkabe (45km).


Built by Doddaveerarajndra in AD 1792 after escaping from Tippu sultan’s troops, safe in the depths of dense forest at the foot of Tadiandamol the highest peak of Kodagu. Elegant two storeyed palace served the last refuge for Chikkaveera-rajendra (Last Coorg King) before he surrendered to the British in AD 1834. This simple palace is famous for its paintings and carvings. Ornamental pillars and verandahs with carved windows and the door frames are its notable fearures. The roof was originally thatched. The cobra symbol is carved in various places in the building. While British army entered Kodagu, the last kin of Halari family Chikaverajendra took shelter here. The palace is a protected monument under archaeology dept.
