CHENNAI - The Crown of Tamil Nadu
Chennai (Madras) is the capital of Tamil Nadu and the fourth biggest city in India. Earlier it was named Madras. It was the first major settlement in India for the British.
Chennai is 334 kms from Bangalore. Distances to other important cities from Chennai are as below (in kms) Delhi - 2157, Pune - 1173, Calcutta - 1678, Vijayawada - 433, Allahabad - 1790, Kanyakumari - 703, Mumbai - 1267, Pondicherry - 163, Tirupati - 157
While the rest of Tamil Nadu is dominated by the temples built by the great hindu Kings of the past, Chennai is dominated by an old English fort built by the British and the decaying colonial houses and soaring Goethic public buildings. The city has an interesting history. The British East India Company arrived in 1639. A friendly and kind Raja of Chandragiri gave land to the Company to set up shop at Madraspatnam (that was the name of the place then). The British built the fort Saint George in 1641 which had about 400 weavers working for them to export cloth to England. Two separate settlements came into existence – one for the white men, later called George Town and the other for the coloured Indians. The colour bar was strictly enforced in those days.
After a couple of decades’ struggle with French, the British were in complete control of the city. They expanded the city further into the countryside and developed gardens, clubs and churches.
