RAMESWARAM - Standing Epic of South India

Rameshwaram (pop: 30, 000) is the Varanasi of South India - a major pilgrim centre. The sacred island of Rameshwaram is 173 km. from Madurai and Sri Lanka is only 80 km. away. It is an island hallowed by lord Rama who worshipped Shiva here after he won the war against Ravana. It is, therefore, sacred to devotees of both Vishnu and Shiva.

This is an island town visited by most of the Hindus in their life. It is 592kms from Chennai. The nearest air port is Madurai which is 154kms away. This place is well associated with the epic Ramayana. It is said that Sri Rama after he killed Ravana, the demo king of Lanka worshipped Lord Shiva here and the place thus named as Rameshwaram.

Sri Ramanatha Swamy temple, Gandhamadhan Parvatam, Kodandarmaswamy temple, coral reef are the places of interest to be seen here and around. The main temple of Sri Ramanathaswamy has pillared corridors which extend to a total length of 1220 meters.
