Location: Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Caribbean archipelago.
History: Formerly a British Colony, it achieved independence in 1962 and became a republic in 1976. Ethnic profile: African descent 40.8%, Indians 40.7%, mixed races 16.3%, Europeans, Chinese and others 2.2%.
There are large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Trinidad and Tobago has the most diversified and industrialized economy in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Industry: Industries include oil processing, manufactured goods, fertilizers, rum, cement and tourism.
Chief Crops: Chief crops are sugarcane, citrus fruit, cocoa, coffee and bananas.
