July 11-13, Putignano Carnival, Italy

The Putignano Carnival has gained fame for its parade of enormous papier-mâché floats and the large bands of masked participants who accompany the floats. The summer carnival is the second parade of the year, with the first taking place from December to February. Visit www.carnevalediputignano.it

July 11-18, International Music Festival

Held in Cyprus, this is one of the few music festivals patronized by both classical and jazz exponents. While the music promises to be exemplary, it is the setting-the 2nd-century Kourion theatre-that lends it unbeatable character. Visit www.kourionfestival.com

July 14-19, Marrakech Popular Arts Festival

The popular Arts Festival is one of the most vibrant events organized in Marrakech. Performers range from fire-swallowers to theatre artists. But the heart of the event is traditional; it's the Moroccan folk musicians that attract the crowds. Visit www.marrakechfestival.com

July 18-20, Boulia Desert Sands, Australia

Camel racing is usually associated with Middle Eastern countries, but Australia too has its share of these races. Desert Sands, held annually in the Outback town of Boulia, witnesses a number of races and novelty events. Buy the three-day pass for $30 - this gives you the option of camping at the grounds. Visit www.boulia.qld.gov.au

July 18-28, Ghent Festivities, Belgium

This event is in fact four festivals rolled into one. Music, dance, street theatre and puppet festivals happen simultaneously and there are parades, fireworks displays and lots of opportunity for eating and drinking as well. Truly a feast for the senses. Visit www.visitbelgium.com

July 22-27, Paleo Festival, Nyon

This Swiss music event has become quite popular in recent times, with over 40,000 visitors attending the concerts. Yet the festival has retained an informal atmosphere. The organizers provide play areas for young families and there are adequate camping facilities. But music remains the main attraction and the 2008 line-up includes Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, The Hives, Mika and Massive Attack. Visit www.2008.paleo.ch
