Jan 10-17 HOT AIR BALLOON WEEK
Held every year in the tiny ski resort of Filzmoos, south of Salzburg, Austria, this event attracts balloonists from everywhere. The star attraction of the event, however, is the Night of Balloons when close to 40 balloons, with their burners ignited, ascend to illuminate the night sky.

JAN 25 KUSHIMOTO FIRE FESTIVAL
The ritual burning of the grassy fields in Wakayama in Japan is an incredible sight. Local archers start the fire by shooting burning arrows into the grass, and then the fire department employs flaming torches to get it going. Some walk through the fire-join them if you dare.
